The Nightingale, featuring the abused Irish character Claire, is now on Amazon Prime. It is also essential, and features perhaps one of the best performances of the year from Aisling Franciosi (“Game of Thrones”). It is brutal and intense, devastating and unflinching. Jennifer Kent’s The Nightingale may just be the hardest film of the year to watch. Where do nightingales nest? You might expect a nightingale – a bird of thickets and woodland – to nest in trees, but it builds its nest on or just above ground level. Where does The Nightingale have her next? It’s a punishing watch a harrowing film which boots home its message by gouging at the vulnerable soft spots of the audience. … But her follow-up feature, The Nightingale, is a whole other level of horrifying. Its brutal sexual violence and unrelenting bleakness will likely be hard to stomach for many viewers, as well it should. “The Nightingale” is, by design, a difficult film to watch. The violence is appropriate (and the film is appropriately difficult to watch). The issue with « The Nightingale » isn’t its violence, nor its portrayal of rape. « The Nightingale » has already caused controversies at festivals, where people walked out, outraged at the multiple violent rape scenes.
